Gas Fireplace Repair in Sioux Falls
Most gas fireplace problems in Sioux Falls come down to a short list of parts: the pilot, the thermocouple or thermopile, the ignition board, the gas valve, the controls or the vent. We find which one with instruments instead of guessing, then give you the price before we fix it. A diagnostic service call typically runs $150 to $300, and common part repairs typically run $200 to $700 installed. The firm number comes after we have seen the unit.
What a repair visit looks like
We start at the rating plate. Heat & Glo says the model information is usually on the rating plate in the control area of the fireplace, and other makes often put it in a similar spot. That tells us the make, the model, the gas type and whether it has a standing pilot or electronic ignition.
Then we test, in roughly this order:
- Gas pressure. A manometer on the valve’s test ports reads inlet and outlet pressure. Low inlet pressure points at the supply, not the fireplace.
- Millivolt or ignition circuit. A multimeter usually tells us whether a thermocouple, thermopile, switch or wire run is the weak link on a millivolt unit. On an electronic unit we check the board, the igniter and the flame sensing rod.
- Flame pattern. A pilot flame that is small, lifting or not wrapping the sensor is often dirt in the pilot hood or a partly blocked orifice.
- Leaks and combustion. A combustible gas detector at the fittings, and a carbon monoxide reading if the flame looks wrong.
- Vent and cap. Direct-vent units breathe through the cap outside. Napoleon’s manual notes that in really cold conditions ice can build up on the terminal, and a blocked vent can produce a blue, lazy flame.
Sioux Falls averages a January normal low of 8.5 F (NOAA, 1991 to 2020), and a fireplace that limps along in October can quit outright by then. If you want the unit checked before the cold, see our annual service.

Makes we work on
We see Heat & Glo, Napoleon, Lennox and Superior, Majestic, Regency, Mendota, Empire and Monessen units, in natural gas and propane. Natural gas parts and propane parts are not interchangeable, which is one more reason we read the plate first.
Gas smell comes before any repair
If you smell rotten eggs or hear a hiss, leave the house. MidAmerican Energy, which supplies natural gas in Sioux Falls and most towns around it, tells customers to leave immediately, touch nothing that could spark, and call the utility and 911 from a safe distance. In Crooks and Renner the gas company is Crooks Municipal Gas. Our gas smell page covers what happens after that.
Licences inside the city
The City of Sioux Falls requires a Fireplace Contractor’s license of all contractors doing fireplace work within city limits, and says anyone paid for mechanical work must be employed by a city-licensed mechanical contractor. Those are separate licences, so ask anyone you hire which city licence covers the job and who is pulling any permit it needs. Outside city limits, check with the town’s building office.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a gas fireplace repair visit cost in Sioux Falls?
A diagnostic service call typically runs $150 to $300. Common part repairs after that usually land between $200 and $700 installed, and a gas valve typically runs $500 to $1,000. You get the firm number once we have tested the unit and read the rating plate.
Can a gas fireplace be fixed on the first visit?
Often, if you send us a photo of the rating plate before we book. Common parts like thermocouples and thermopiles are easy to match. Brand-specific parts such as a particular ignition board, remote receiver or ceramic glass may need ordering, and we tell you that before we start.
I smell rotten eggs near the fireplace. Is that a repair call?
Not first. A rotten egg or skunk smell is the odorant MidAmerican Energy adds to natural gas. Leave the house, do not touch anything that could spark, and call MidAmerican and 911 from outside. In Crooks and Renner call Crooks Municipal Gas. Once the utility has cleared the house, we can trace and fix the leak.
Who is allowed to work on a gas fireplace inside Sioux Falls?
The City of Sioux Falls requires a Fireplace Contractor's license of all contractors doing fireplace work within city limits, and anyone paid for mechanical work must work for a city-licensed mechanical contractor. The city licenses the two separately, so ask anyone you hire which city licence covers the job.
