Gas fireplace repair cost estimator
The estimator above builds a typical repair range from four answers: what the fireplace is doing, how it lights, how old it is and which fuel it burns. It starts from our $150 to $300 diagnostic service call and adds the part family that usually sits behind the symptom you pick. A thermocouple job, for example, comes out at $350 to $700 with the service call, while a gas valve, the most expensive common part, adds $500 to $1,000 installed. We give the firm number after we have seen the unit.
What sits behind each symptom
| Symptom | Part family added | Typical installed range |
|---|---|---|
| Pilot lights, then goes out | Thermocouple or thermopile | $200 to $400 |
| Will not turn on at all | Remote, wall switch or control board | $150 to $700 |
| Lights, goes out, then relights | Sensing rod, pilot assembly or board | $150 to $600 |
| Foggy glass or white film | Cleaning, up to glass and gasket | $0 to $600 |
| Blower or fan does not run | Blower or fan kit | $250 to $600 |
| Remote or wall thermostat does nothing | Receiver, switch or thermostat | $150 to $400 |
| Gas valve suspected | Gas valve | $500 to $1,000 |
Each symptom has its own page with the safe checks to try first. A pilot that drops when you let go of the knob is covered on pilot light will not stay lit, and a unit that does nothing at all on fireplace will not turn on. Several of those checks, such as batteries, the selector switch or a snow-covered vent cap, can solve it before anyone needs to visit.
Why ignition, age and fuel change the range
Ignition. A standing pilot fireplace runs on millivolt parts: a thermocouple, a thermopile and a valve that need no house power. An electronic unit adds an ignition board and a flame sensing rod, and those parts usually cost more. If you do not know which you have, the “not sure” option widens the range a little.
Age. Older fireplaces more often need a second part once the first is fixed, and parts for older models can take more work to match. The Census shows how mixed the local housing is: 26.1% of homes in Sioux Falls were built before 1970, while 70.8% in Harrisburg date from 2000 or later. That is house age, not fireplace age, so go by the fireplace if you know it.
Fuel. MidAmerican Energy supplies natural gas in Sioux Falls and most nearby towns, and Crooks Municipal Gas serves Crooks and Renner. Propane is more common in the rural county, and a propane unit needs propane-specific parts, so that option adds a small margin.
What the estimate cannot see
The tool knows your answers, not your fireplace. It cannot read the rating plate, test the thermopile or measure the gas pressure. Heat & Glo’s manual lists verifying manifold and inlet pressures among its annual technician tasks, and a low supply pressure can make a healthy fireplace look broken. It also cannot tell whether the job is a part swap or something larger.
If the work turns into gas piping, inside Sioux Falls city limits anyone paid for mechanical work must be employed by a city-licensed mechanical contractor, so ask which city license covers the job. For fall cleaning rather than a repair, see annual service, and every price we publish is on the pricing page.
What is my gas fireplace repair likely to cost?
Answer four questions about the fireplace. Each line uses a range from our pricing page, so you see a budget before we come out.
Every range here is one we publish on the pricing page. Foggy glass starts at zero parts because many of those visits end with a proper cleaning, not new glass.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do the estimator's numbers come from?
Our pricing page: a $150 to $300 diagnostic service call, $200 to $400 for a thermocouple or thermopile, $300 to $600 for a pilot assembly, $350 to $700 for an ignition module or control board, $150 to $400 for a remote receiver, wall switch or wall thermostat, $250 to $600 for a blower, $200 to $600 for glass and gasket, and $500 to $1,000 for a gas valve.
Why is the gas valve its own option and not part of every symptom?
Because a valve is the most expensive part and the one most often blamed too early. We replace a valve only after the pilot flame, thermocouple or thermopile, switch and wiring have tested good. Pick that option only if someone has already tested the valve and found it bad.
How close will the estimate be to my final bill?
Close enough to plan around for a common repair. What the tool cannot see is the rating plate, a second worn part, or a gas supply problem outside the fireplace. Heat & Glo says the rating plate is usually in the control area, and a photo of it narrows the range before we arrive.
Does the estimate change in Crooks or Renner?
Not because of the gas company. Natural gas from Crooks Municipal Gas and from MidAmerican Energy uses the same natural gas parts. What moves the number is propane versus natural gas, the ignition type and the age of the unit.
