About Sioux Falls Gas Fireplace Repair

Sioux Falls Gas Fireplace Repair is an independently operated local service that repairs and maintains gas fireplaces, gas inserts and gas log sets in Sioux Falls and the towns around it: Brandon, Harrisburg, Tea, Hartford, Crooks, Renner, Dell Rapids and Lennox. Repair and service of gas fireplaces is the whole job: we do not work on furnaces, water heaters or wood stoves.

How we work

We find the fault before we sell a part. A gas fireplace has a short list of parts that fail, and several of them can produce the same symptom. A pilot that will not hold can be a dusty pilot hood, a tired thermocouple, a loose connection or, less often, the valve. Our techs take readings on the pilot circuit and the gas pressure so the part we replace is the part that failed.

We publish typical prices. Every common repair has a range on our pricing page, from the $150 to $300 service call to the $500 to $1,000 gas valve. You can also run your own symptom through the cost estimator. The firm price comes after we have seen the unit, and you hear it before any part goes in.

We tell you when to call someone else first. If you smell gas, the first call is not to us. It is to your gas utility and 911, from outside the house. In Sioux Falls, Brandon, Harrisburg, Tea, Hartford, Dell Rapids and Lennox the utility is MidAmerican Energy; in Crooks and Renner it is Crooks Municipal Gas. The gas smell page covers what to do, step by step.

What we work on

Factory-built direct-vent fireplaces, gas inserts set into masonry fireplaces, and vented and vent-free log sets. Standing pilot units and electronic ignition units, natural gas and propane. Makes include Heat & Glo, Heatilator, Napoleon, Lennox and Superior, Majestic, Monessen, Regency, Mendota and Empire. The services are listed on the services page.

Why a fireplace-only service in Sioux Falls

Because the season is long and the fireplace matters. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Sioux Falls airport count 7,248.5 heating degree days a year, and January averages a high of 27.2 degrees. About 26% of the city’s homes were built before 1970 and about 40% in 2000 or later, so one call can be an electronic unit with a remote in a newer Harrisburg house and the next a log set with a standing pilot in an older home in town. They share a symptom list and almost no parts.

Licences and permits

We do not ask you to take our word on credentials. Inside Sioux Falls city limits the city requires a Fireplace Contractor’s license of all contractors doing fireplace work, and anyone paid for mechanical work must work for a mechanical contractor licensed by the city. Those are separate licences, and the city says a fireplace contractor may not do electrical, plumbing or mechanical work without the matching licence. Ask anyone you hire, us included, which city licence covers the work you want done, and for new installs ask who is taking out the permit. Outside the city, ask the town’s building office what it requires.

Where we go

Sioux Falls and the nearby towns in Minnehaha and Lincoln counties. Town pages for Brandon, Harrisburg, Tea and Crooks and Renner cover what is different about each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on wood-burning fireplaces or chimneys?

No. We work on gas appliances only: gas fireplaces, gas inserts and gas log sets. If a masonry chimney needs sweeping or repair before a gas insert or log set goes in, that is a chimney specialist's job, and we will tell you when we think one is needed.

Can you replace a fireplace that is past repair?

Ask us. Most of our work is repair and service, and when a unit is past repair we say so and give you the typical cost of a replacement, $4,000 to $8,000 installed for a direct-vent insert. Inside Sioux Falls, installing a fireplace is work the city licenses, so ask whoever quotes the install which city licence they hold and who is taking out the permit.

What should I have ready when I call or send the form?

What the fireplace is doing and when it started, whether it has a standing pilot or lights with a click, the fuel (natural gas or propane), and a photo of the rating plate if you can reach it. Heat & Glo says its rating plate is usually in the control area of the fireplace, often behind the lower grille or louver.
