Gas Fireplace Repair in Harrisburg, South Dakota

Gas fireplace repair in Harrisburg costs the same as in Sioux Falls: a diagnostic service call typically $150 to $300, annual service $175 to $350 per fireplace, and common part repairs $200 to $600 installed. What is different here is the age of the houses. Harrisburg has the newest housing in our area, so a fireplace here is more likely to have electronic ignition, a remote and a control board than a worn-out thermocouple.

A fast-growing Lincoln County city

Harrisburg is a city in Lincoln County and a suburb of Sioux Falls, about 7 straight-line miles south of the middle of the city. The 2020 census counted 6,732 people. Growth since then has been fast enough that city officials estimated the population at about 12,000 in February 2026. The town itself dates to 1890, when the railroad depot moved to its present site, and the 1899 State Bank building still stands on Railroad Avenue.

The housing numbers from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey show how recent most of it is:

BuiltHomesShare
2010 or later1,07436%
2000 to 20091,02535%
1990 to 199929210%
1970 to 19892017%
Before 197037313%

That is 71% built in 2000 or later, the highest share of any town we cover, and the survey predates much of the growth since. About three in four occupied homes heat with utility gas, which MidAmerican Energy supplies in Harrisburg.

What newer fireplaces need

A fireplace in a newer house is often a direct-vent unit with electronic ignition: a spark igniter, a flame sensing rod, a control board and a remote. Many of them do not keep a pilot burning all summer, and their faults look different:

  • Nothing happens. Often batteries in the remote or receiver, a wall switch, or the control’s ON/OFF/REMOTE selector left on OFF. Heat & Glo’s manual says to put that selector on OFF when the control goes into lockout. See fireplace will not turn on.
  • It lights, goes out, tries again. The control has to prove the flame; a sooted sensing rod or a weak pilot flame breaks that proof. Heat & Glo lists polishing or replacing the sensing rod as an annual service task. See flame goes out and relights.
  • It shuts off on its own after hours. Heat & Glo’s TRUE models shut down automatically after 9 hours of continuous running without a command from the remote. That is a safety feature, not a fault.

A new unit can also fog its glass or leave a film in its first hours of use. Heat & Glo’s manual calls film a normal result of curing paint and logs and says to clean the glass within 3 to 4 hours of the first burn. See foggy glass or white film.

Harrisburg’s code and permits

Harrisburg writes its own mechanical rules. Ordinance 2021-19 adopted the 2021 International Mechanical Code and International Fuel Gas Code for permits issued after December 31, 2021, with one- and two-family homes falling under the International Residential Code, and it gives inspections to the city’s mechanical inspector. That ordinance may since have been updated. For a new fireplace, insert or gas line, ask the installer which permit covers it and who is pulling it.

Snow on the cap

Many direct-vent fireplaces vent straight out a side wall. Sioux Falls airport normals give the area 45.3 inches of snow a year, and Napoleon’s manual warns that ice can build up on the terminal in really cold conditions. Clearing the cap is the first check whenever a newer unit starts shutting down in a storm. If it is still acting up, our gas fireplace repair visit starts with the readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you cover Harrisburg?

Yes. Harrisburg is in Lincoln County about 7 straight-line miles south of the middle of Sioux Falls, and it is part of our regular area with the same prices: a diagnostic service call typically runs $150 to $300 and annual service $175 to $350 per fireplace.

My Harrisburg fireplace is only a few years old. Why does it keep shutting off?

On newer units with electronic ignition the usual suspects are the remote and the flame proving circuit, not old age. Check that the remote is not in a thermostat mode that turns the flame off when the room is warm, change the batteries, and clear snow or ice from the outside vent cap. If it still lights, goes out and retries, the flame sensing rod or the pilot flame is the next thing we test.

Which code applies to gas fireplaces in Harrisburg?

Harrisburg adopted the 2021 International Mechanical Code and International Fuel Gas Code by Ordinance 2021-19, for permits issued after December 31, 2021, and houses fall under the International Residential Code. Fuel gas appliances and their venting are regulated by the Fuel Gas Code, and inspections go through the city's mechanical inspector. Ask your installer who is taking out the permit.
